Pro-North Korea newspaper in Japan monetizes website with paywall

Paywall system will limit reach of publication, but could spark sanctions concerns

A Japanese newspaper produced by a pro-North Korea community is now monetizing its website with a new paywall system, NK News has found.

The Choson Sinbo, which is produced by the pro-North Korea Chongryon community in Tokyo, Japan, added a payment system during a website redesign that went live sometime last month. The Chongryon community is a pro-DPRK group of ethnic Koreans in Japan who first came from the peninsula when it was still unified, and the new development marks the first time a North Korea-linked newspaper has tried to make money off a credit card-supported paywall.
