North Korea's premier east coast city of Wonsan suffered "dozens of casualties" from Typhoon Maysak (Typhoon No. 9) this week due to the failure of local city and provincial officials to properly carry out instructions from central authorities, the state-run Rodong Sinmun reported on Saturday, Sept. 5.
A meeting was held on Thursday -- just hours after the typhoon passed through Wonsan -- to discuss the incident and impose "strong punishment" on those responsible, according to the report. It was chaired by Kim Jae Ryong, a top official recently demoted as Premier of the Cabinet but who still serves as Vice Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee (CC).
