North and South Korea make contact in Bangkok at DPRK census planning talks

Delegates from Seoul and Pyongyang participate in talks on UNFPA plans for 2018 study

Delegations representing the two Koreas rubbed shoulders in Bangkok, Thailand this week to discuss United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) support plans for a North Korean census to be carried out next year, a source told NK News on Wednesday evening.

The two Koreas, UN representatives, and delegates from other countries including Mongolia, Thailand, and Cambodia reportedly discussed means to ensure compliance with international and unilateral sanctions against the North, arrangements for the training of surveyors, the project's USD$5 million funding shortfall, as well as plans to bring in third-party experts to monitor the census.
