S. Korean expert suggests concurrent Six-Party, peace talks

Former high-ranking official suggests verifiable denuclearization as necessary for talks to begin

A South Korean professor and former foreign affairs official on Friday proposed combining a resumed Six-Party Talks (SPT) with talks on formally ending the Korean War.

Kim Sung-han of Korea University, who served as vice minister of Foreign Affairs under President Lee Myung-bak, suggested that this method could normalize North Korea's diplomatic relations with Japan and the U.S. while establishing a permanent peace system on the Korean Peninsula. Kim stated this at the event entitled "New Approaches: Resolving North Korea's Nuclear Issue," co-hosted by the Institute for National Security Strategy (INSS) and the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in the U.S.
