S. Korea considers shoot-on-sight rule following mine incident

Experts, former personnel say rule change could cause escalation of incidents

South Korea's Ministry of Defense plans to change the rules of engagement, allowing its soldiers to shoot North Korean personnel on sight should they cross the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), South Korean media have reported.

The proposed change comes in response to the recent detonation of a mine, allegedly planted by North Korean personnel, which resulted in two South Korean soldiers losing part or all of their legs.
