Statement regarding ‘nightlife’ column error

Ask a North Korean column contained inaccurate information, has been withdrawn from site

NK News’ March 19 Ask a North Korean column, entitled “What passes for nightlife in North Korea?” contained inaccurate information and has been pulled from our website.

In it the author, Yoo-sung Kim, states that North Korea does not have bars and nightclubs, based on his experience and a prior ban on karaoke instituted by Kim Jong Il more than a decade ago. However, cities in the North, including the capital Pyongyang, are known to contain such establishments. Kim’s column even admits that nightclubs and bars may exist, even if they cater exclusively to elites.
